  20.       * DIRECTX 6.1 Installer
  21.       -- IMPORTANT NOTE: DirectX is required (Windows 95/98) for the game demo 
  22.       to run. The LAUNCH setup program will run the DirectX installer if DirectX 
  23.       is not detected on your system. For best results, make sure you have the 
  24.       latest videocard and soundcard drivers from the appropriate manufacturers.

  32.       1. Getting Started / Navigation
  33.  
  34.       Insert LAUNCH into your CD-ROM drive and follow on-screen instructions. 
  35.         Hand Icon -- Click once to make things happen. 
  36.         Magnifying Glass -- Click your mouse & view video at double size. 
  37.         Bulls Eye -- Nothing going on here. Keep looking. 
  38.         Question Mark -- HELP provides a map to the area you are exploring. 
  39.         Hand -- ABOUT provides more details on the story. 
  40.         Arrow -- RETURN brings you back to the previous screen. 
  41.         Quit -- QUIT returns you to the desktop.

  45.       2. Tips 
  46.         Switch to True Color (24 or 32 bit) display mode for best-looking 
  47.         graphics and video. (go to Control Panels / Display / Settings tab / 
  48.         Color palette) 
  49.         Connect to your internet provider before running LAUNCH for content off 
  50.         the web. Be sure to have Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 (or higher) 
  51.         installed [http://www.microsoft.com/ie]. 
  52.         Multitasking is not recommended. (Quit other applications before running 
  53.         LAUNCH for best performance) 
  54.         If you are running LAUNCH in a window and multitasking, click on the 
  55.         title bar to return focus to the LAUNCH window.

  59.       3. Startup Problems
  60.       * Nothing appears when CD is put into drive
  61.         Autoplay may be turned off on your computer. In this case, please go to 
  62.         "My Computer" and double-click on the LAUNCH CD-ROM icon and run 
  63.         "Setup.exe". In rare cases, the Autoplay screen may be glitched or fail 
  64.         to load. Make sure you have the latest Windows video drivers for your 
  65.         specific video card if this is the case. These can usually be downloaded 
  66.         from the manufacturer's website.
  67.       * "IOS failed to initilize" error message after installation
  68.         This is a rare problem which may occur on early versions of Windows 95. 
  69.         Solution from Microsoft support:
  70.  
  71.         1. Boot Windows 95 in Safe mode or to a command prompt.
  72.         2. Perform one of the following two steps: 
  73.     - Edit the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files and disable any
  74.       references to Smartdrv.exe. To disable a line, type "rem"
  75.       (without quotation marks) at the beginning of the line.
  76.  
  77.     - Rename Smartdrv.exe to another name.
  78.  
  79.         3. Restart your computer normally. 
  80.       * Slow Load Time
  81.         Minimum system requirements have increased slightly starting with issue 
  82.         15. Slow load times can be caused by a number of factors or combinations 
  83.         of system components. Surpassing the following suggested system 
  84.         requirements (particularly RAM) will improve performance of LAUNCH. If 
  85.         your computer is near the minimum requirements, LAUNCH should play but 
  86.         load times may be slow.
  87.  
  88.         If you receive a "Cannot open START.DXR" or something similar when 
  89.         starting up LAUNCH, most likely a component on your system falls below 
  90.         the minimum requirement.
  91.       * Suggested System Requirements *
  92.         Windows 95/98
  93.         Pentium 166
  94.         24 MB RAM
  95.         4X+ CD-ROM drive
  96.         16-bit soundcard
  97.  
  98.         For the smoothest LAUNCH experience, a Pentium II-class computer, 32 MB 
  99.         RAM, and a 24X CD-ROM drive are highly suggested.
  100.       * Installation / Quicktime 4.0
  101.         * If you get a system error or general protection fault while running 
  102.         the installer,
  103.         1) turn off any antivirus software you may have running.
  104.         2) delete all files in your C:\Windows\Temp directory and try again.
  105.  
  106.         It is ok to also have both 16-bit and 32-bit versions of Quicktime 2 on 
  107.         your system (required for older versions of LAUNCH). They have been 
  108.         designed to coexist on the same system with no conflicts.
  109.  
  110.         Older versions of LAUNCH may require older versions of Quicktime:
  111.               LAUNCH 1 - 14:Quicktime 2.1.2 (16-bit)
  112.               LAUNCH 15 - 19:Quicktime 2.1.2 (32-bit)
  113.               LAUNCH 20 - 30 :Quicktime 3.0 / 4.0
  114.               LAUNCH 31+:Quicktime 4.0
  115.  
  116.         Note: A Quicktime for Windows program group will be created.You don't 
  117.         need any of these files to access LAUNCH. These icons are just there as 
  118.         part of the Quicktime installation program and may be used to run 
  119.         Quicktime movies externally, such as ones that are downloaded from the 
  120.         internet.
  121.  
  122.         Due to a problem with detecting Quicktime, LAUNCH #20 will only work 
  123.         with Quicktime 3.0 and 3.01. All other issues should work with any 
  124.         version of Quicktime 3. If you have 3.02 on your system and would like 
  125.         to run #20, you'll have to delete the file 
  126.         c:\windows\system\quicktime.qts and run the Quicktime installer from 
  127.         issue #20. After viewing issue #20, you can reinstall Quicktime 3.02 if 
  128.         you wish by running the installer (included starting with issue #22). We 
  129.         apologize for this inconvenience.
  130.       * General Errors
  131.         LAUNCH does not install anything on your system (Windows 95 or later) 
  132.         besides Quicktime and ActiveX Controls, all content is run off the CD.
  133.         * Get the latest video drivers from your video cards manufacturer, 
  134.         especially if you have an ATI video card (Windows 95/98, Mac) or STB 
  135.         Nitro video card.
  136.         * Downloaded files and some temporary files are stored in the 
  137.         C:\Windows\Lnchprfs directory, please delete these if you are getting 
  138.         errors running LAUNCH or would like to recover the hard disk space.
  139.         * Re-installing Quicktime may also fix other errors.

  143.       4. Audio/video problems
  144.       * Color mode/palette
  145.         LAUNCH is optimized for Windows 95/98, videocard at the true color (24 
  146.         or 32 bit) setting.
  147.         * Windows 95/98 -- To run in 16-bit color, your video card setting must 
  148.         be set to that color bit-depth. The ways to switch color bit-depths vary 
  149.         from computer to computer, usually it is a control panel installed along 
  150.         with the video card. In Windows 95/98, go to:
  151.  
  152.         Control Panel -> Display -> Settings and change the color palette 
  153.         setting to True Color (24 or 32 bit).
  154.       * Video glitches during playback
  155.         * Go to Control Panel -> Quicktime -> Video Settings and switch from 
  156.         Options mode to Safe Mode. Updated video drivers from the video card 
  157.         manufacturer may be required.

  159.       * No sound in LAUNCH / general audio problems
  160.         1. Make sure WAV volume is turned up in your mixer (Windows 95/98 - 
  161.         double-click on the speaker in the bottom right hand corner of the 
  162.         screen) and that you can play .WAV audio (you should be able to hear 
  163.         previews in the Sounds control panel).
  164.  
  165.         2. Make sure you have the latest sound drivers from the manufacturer of 
  166.         your soundcard installed. Usually they can be downloaded from the 
  167.         manufacturer's website.
  168.  
  169.         3. You may get better results with sound in LAUNCH by going to Control 
  170.         Panel -> Quicktime -> Sound Out and switching from DirectSound to 
  171.         waveOut.
  172.  
  173.         4. There may be a conflict between the Quicktime music synthesizer and 
  174.         the soundcard's software wavetable emulation. To remove the Quicktime 
  175.         music synthesizer, go to Control Panel -> Quicktime -> Music -> Edit 
  176.         List -> Synthesizer. Choose "No synthesizer" in the synthesizer list.
  177.  
  178.         5. Soundcards with software wavetable emulation [most cards do NOT have 
  179.         this feature] may cause Quicktime audio sync problems. Please turn off 
  180.         this feature to see if it is causing the problem. This can be done 
  181.         usually in a soundcard specific control panel or go to Control Panel -> 
  182.         System -> Device Manager -> Sound, Video and Game Controllers and 
  183.         disable this option from there.
